FAQ

Application

Q: What is the application procedure?
The application for AMSC08 consist of 2 parts:
1) Application Form
2) Selection Interview

Q: Who will make up the Hong Kong delegation for AMSC2008
The whole Hong Kong delegation will consist of medical students from either the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) with equal representation from both universities. The delegation will consist of both members of the Executive Committee of AMSAHK as well as non-ExCo students.

Selection

Q: What is the selection criteria?
For selection of non-AMSAHK-ExCo as delegate for AMSC08, selection will be made on your enthusiasm and contribution potential as judged from your 1) application form and 2) interview.

Q: If I have already been to a previous AMSA conference, will this affect the result of my application for AMSC08?
The main answer to this question would be no! Your previous participation should not act against you during the selection process. You will be primarily judged by your performance and motivation as shown through your 1) application form and 2) interview.

However, to offer all students a fair opportunity to attend a conference, should an event arise in which two applicants of similar standing are up for one spot left, then preference may be given to the applicant who has never participated in an AMSA conference previously.

Q: How will I know whether I have been selected?
We will inform each applicant of their application result by phone or e-mail as soon as the selection have been finalized.

Cost Matters

Q: What does the registration fee include?
All accommodation, transportation, food, activities, cultural visit entrance fees during your stay in Japan during the conference (July 25 – Aug 1 2008).

Q: Will there be any subsidy for conference related fees for HK delegates?
Yes. To help more students to afford the cost of AMSC, AMSAHK will partially subsidize the cost of the conference for each delegate from Hong Kong. A limited number of need-based Travel Scholarships will also be available from AMSAHK’s patrons and sponsoring organizations.

Conference activities

Q: What type of activities will I be involved in during the conference?
The 7 days of the conference will be packed with Academic activities (paper, poster competitions, keynote speeches, symposium and discussion workshops); cultural (cultural workshop, cultural night, city sight-seeing); and group activities.

Q: What is the scale of the conference? Who are the participants?
AMSC2008 promises to be the largest AMSC yet! With about 400 delegates from around the Asia-Pacific region and UK. All delegates will be primarily medical students. Guest speakers will be invited from different Japanese Universities in support of the conference and AMSA Japan.

Q: Will I be attached to the HK delegation throughout the conference?
As the conference begins, you will be separated into groups (which will really become your ‘family’ for the next 5 days) – led by more than one Thai medical student called ‘Group Moderators’ (GM).

Delegates Information

Q: Will my participation in AMSC2008 allow me to apply for SSM (special studies module) and PETSS hours at HKU?
Approval has been gained for SSM and PETSS hours in the previous 2 years. AMSAHK’s ExCos will do our best to assist participating delegates to gain successful application for this year’s conference.

Q: What are my responsibilities as an AMSC2008 delegate?
As a delegate representing Hong Kong, you will be expected to uphold a courteous and dignified attitude. In addition to attending all AMSC conference activities in Japan, all delegates will be expected to participate in 1) preparatory work as a part of the academic or cultural team; 2) pre-conference activities; and 3) post-conference activities in Hong Kong.
