Academic activities have always been an important wing of Asian Medical Students’ Association Hong Kong. In light of this, the Academic Department was established to foster understanding in medical and health problems as well as to empower medical students in using their knowledge and capacities for the benefit of the society.
In the past, the Academic Department of AMSAHK comprised of a councilor and two secretaries. In 2011-2012, however, the Academic Department will be expanded to one councilor, one honourary councilor, and four secretaries. The Councilor is a member from the previous Executive Committee and, along with the Honourary Councilor, is responsible for providing guidance and advice to the department. The secretaries are medical students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong respectively.
The Academic Department, as its name implies, is responsible for all academic affairs of the association. Its four major roles are as follows:
- Directing, coordinating and facilitating
the production of academic papers, reports, presentations and posters
that will be presented at AMSA conferences
- Preparing members for the conferences' topics by organizing seminars
and discussions led by academic staff and professionals with expertise
in the relevant fields
Contacting and inviting doctors / professors to offer or present their
professional knowledge regarding the topics for the conferences or any
other academic activities organized by AMSAHK
- Communicating and working with the academic counterparts of AMSA International
in supporting and contributing to international research projects
The short history of the Academic Department has been one filled with honours and achievements. With our members’ effort, the Academic Department has successfully assisted the association in obtaining very satisfactory results in various academic contests. They include the champion of The Best Poster, The Most Popular Poster and The Most Popular Paper awards in the Asian Medical Students’ Conference (AMSC) 2004, and the champion of The Best Paper Award in the East Asian Medical Students’ Conference (EAMSC) 2005. Marvelous results obtained more recently include the ones in EAMSC 2010 Kuala Lumpur, where we got first runner-up in the Scientific Poster Competition and second runner-up in the Public Poster Competition, and in EAMSC 2011 Bangkok, where we were awarded the Winner of the Medical Poster Competition with first place in both Scientific Poster and Public Poster.
The Academic Department will continue
to strive for its best in facilitating academic affairs of the association
and will continue to produce academic documents and presentations of the
highest standard.
