From Yvonne Poon

Before stepping into the clinical years – which I consider the most challenging years of medical school and as a new chapter if my life were a story book – I have spent several days reflecting upon what I did in the past two years. I basically cannot deny how clever humans are: We tend to forget the things that we want to forget, yet storing bits and pieces of happy moments firmly at the back of our heads. When I was searching through my mind, I cannot say all, but a great lot, of my memory is related to the Asian Medical Students Association Hong Kong (AMSAHK). AMSAHK is not just a student organization: it is a union, a family.

Being the Councillor of Publications and Promotion Department this year has not been an easy job. After months of preparation, we now proudly present the newsletter of AMSAHK 2008-2009 to all of you. In this newsletter, we hope to let each and every one of you –whether you are a doctor, a medical student or just simply a passer-by – to have a glimpse at this globally-established union as well as to know more about the vision, activities and impact of AMSAHK.

This newsletter introduces and depicts the exciting and interesting experience we had at the East Asian Medical Students Conference 2008 in Thailand and the Asian Medical Student Conference 2008 in Tokyo; the diverse and unique taste of the General Assembly (GA) organized by the Internal Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) in Jamaica in August;  the first-ever “Food Safety and Health Workshop” held by the Standing Committee On Public Health (SCOPH); the enriching academic experiences we had through academic visits and public lectures (AMSAHK Lecture Series in April) and many more. How can you miss any single bit of it?

There are 2 words which I really want to say to AMSAHK: Thank you. I have grown in AMSAHK and I am indeed very delighted to see that AMSAHK has also gained publicity and started to blossom in recent years. I believe that my bond to AMSAHK is beyond words and I wish that AMSAHK will continue to flourish.

From Shirley Wong

Hello! I'm so glad you've started on this newsletter, and I'm just going to keep my message short because I've done too much writing for my own good, and you're going to have a lot more reading to do after this anyway(;

2008 has definitely been a fruitful year for AMSAHK and, after many very long nights of writing and sorting out html and tables, I've managed to concentrate it all into one annual volume. We've written way too much for me to list it all out, so you can start here if you don't know where to begin. Thank you everyone who have contributed - I am eternally grateful to all those who have helped, you guys rock.

This year has been a blast, I love AMSAHK for giving me so many amazing opportunities and experiences, and I hope you enjoy this newsletter as much as I do. Happy reading!

From Yvonne So

AMSAHK has gone through an extremely eventful ‘Year of Advancement’ from international conferences to our first local public health workshops and of course our ongoing exchanges, every highlight of the year can be found in this issue of our newsletter! This newsletter is a composition of all the hard work our ExCo and delegates have put into AMSAHK and is definitely a combined effort from us all. After all, without all the events we wouldn’t have so much to write about. Having said that, I would like to thank my lovely P&P counterpart Shirley for putting up with me this year and also to our dearest councilor Yvonne Poon.

I hope you all enjoy reading our newsletter and see you at our future AMSAHK events! :)
