EAMSC 2025
The East Asian Medical Students' Conference (EAMSC) is an annual event hosted by cities across Asia, bringing together medical students from the region to discuss various health issues. Through a combination of academic discussions, sociocultural activities, and community service, the conference challenges participants to think beyond their medical education and engage with the broader implications of the year's theme. EAMSC was hosted in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, from 15-19 January 2025, under the theme "Climate Change, Global Warming, and Human Health: Impacts, Vulnerability, and Public Health." AMSAHK sent a total of 28 delegates to participate in this year’s conference, where it addressed one of the most critical challenges of our time— climate change—and its far-reaching effects on public health.
Our academic department was selected as a finalist in the scientific paper category. Over the course of three months, they collaborated closely with Dr. Abraham Wai from the Department of Emergency Medicine at HKUMed to develop an abstract titled “Impacts of Extreme Heat on Accident & Emergency Attendances in Hong Kong: A Territory-wide Retrospective Cohort Study.”

Participant testimonials
From my first time presenting at an academic conference to dancing to Egyptian songs with our Egyptian hosts while the sun set over the Red Sea, EAMSC 2025 is an experience I will never forget. Sessions such as conversing with prominent Egyptian professors on Environmental Health and learning how to treat a patient for acute heat stroke from an Emergency Medicine physician served an engaging learning experiences, deepening my understanding of the Conference's theme: "Climate Change, Global Warming and Human Health".
Nevertheless, it is the people we meet and the connections we make that make these conferences such invaluable learning opportunities. Chatting with delegates from all over Asia about our countries' respective healthcare systems and medical education methodologies was eye-opening, helping to broaden my horizons and giving me ideas on we can take better charge of our medical education here in Hong Kong. Moreover, being a member of the international AMSEP subcommittee, I was able to meet two of my online teammates in person for the first time, which was truly something special. Witnessing the next two generations of medical students find their passion for international collaboration and advocacy was heartwarming and I hope our activities can continue to serve as a conduit connecting medical students here in Hong Kong with the rest of our international community.

Attending EAMSC 2025 in Egypt as an academic delegate has been nothing short of spectacular. Presenting a scientific paper for the first time in a conference was a significant milestone, providing me with the opportunity to discuss climate research topics with international peers, and learn from a diverse range of medical research studies. While I initially expected a work-ridden conference full of lectures and parallel sessions about the theme of 'Climate Change', I was surprised to attend a vast array of sociocultural activities that allowed me to engage in enriching cultural performances and dances, while forging friendships with medical students from different parts of the world. The memories I've made at this conference, from presenting in the academic competitions to driving an ATV at sunrise in the stunning desert safaris of Sharm El Sheikh, have truly been transformative both as a learning experience for my future career and as an explorer of life's offerings. Reflecting on my time there, I believe that besides gaining invaluable knowledge in the area of climate medicine, what I will cherish most are the enlightening conversations and lifelong memories I've shared with delegates from different AMSA chapters.
